DETOURS DISCUSSION 2012

A one-day symposium about programme and place

There are many contextual factors that can affect contemporary art programmes, from local politics and finance, through institutional history, to current cultural ambitions and geography. Whether in and for building-based, formal institutions, or in more porous situations including ‘public art’ commissioning, context plays a part in the making of a programme. Is it appropriate or relevant today to imagine that a programme can instill change in a given context? Or is an over-attention to context a constraint to creative programming?

Speakers include:

Mike Crang, professor at Durham University with an interest in cultural geography.

Nina Möntmann, curator and professor at the Royal University College of Fine Arts (KKH) in Stockholm, and editor of 'Art and its Institutions' (Black Dog Publishing) 2006.

Toby Paterson, artist, with an interest in architecture, which he deconstructs both materially and politically. Toby has also produced numerous commissions in the public realm.

Andrea Schlieker, freelance curator, lecturer and writer. Curator of British Art Show 6 and the Folkestone Triennial 2008 & 2011.

Simon Groom, Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
